Gratitude – The Secret to Happiness
One of my main goals for this year it to be a person who is filled with more JOY.
“The root of joy is gratefulness…It is not joy that makes us grateful; it is gratitude that makes us joyful.” ~ David Steindl-Rast
Let me be the first to admit – I struggle being grateful. I don’t resist it, I just don’t think of it. Blame it on my formative years or my “undiagnosed ADD” (according to my sweet, patient wife!). Kidding aside, I am serious about being a grateful person because I know there is life-changing power in gratitude. Let me show you exactly what that power looks like in your life.
Fall is my favourite time of year and November is a month that usually helps us take a deep breath and reflect. There’s Fall break, Thanksgiving holidays with family and friends, and the ushering in of Christmas decorations and those first Christmas carols. This time of year I even see friends on Facebook participating in gratitude challenges. People want to get into the holiday spirit and many of them simply see this as a nice thing to do. But, the power of gratitude is SO MUCH bigger.
Did you know practicing gratitude can literally help you live longer, have a better quality of life and be a much happier person? It helps your marriage grow stronger, helps you be a better friend, helps you become a better father or mother. Groundbreaking research like this study prove that a grateful attitude helps you in at least (3) areas. Here are some of the life benefits for gratefully motivated people:
• Stronger immune systems (Yes, you actually get sick less!)
• Fewer aches and pains in your body
• Lowers your blood pressure
• Helps you sleep better
• Higher levels of positive emotions
• More alert, alive, and awake
• Creates more joy in your live
• You are a more optimistic and happier person
• Kinder, more compassionate and generous
• More forgiving
• Deeper relationships – which helps you to be less lonely
A recent study by Alex Wood in the Journal of Research in Personality (2008), proved that active gratitude reduces the frequency and duration of bouts of depression and can also help reduce negative emotions such as envy, resentment and regret. Think about that for second. How much better would your life be with less envy, resentment, and regret?
Active Gratitude has the power to create a “virtuous circle” in your mind and in your emotions. It builds its own momentum in your life and relationships. You and I literally have nothing to lose and so much to gain! I strongly encourage you to make gratitude a part of your everyday life. To help you get started, I have some great tips in my free e-book you can download immediately here.
If you want your life to be life filled with more Joy, Peace, and Happiness you must do something different! Cultivating gratitude is a powerful place to start.
If you have other great Gratitude ideas, please let me know. Thankful today for each of you!!
