This 1 Simple Shift Will Begin to Help Your Dreams Become Reality

February 25, 2016 Coaching 5 minutes

I want to show you 1 incredibly effective change to make in your life so that you can begin to see your dreams come true – and it’s scientifically proven to work. You can create the kinds of changes in your life you long for, but two things have to happen for you to be successful: (1) knowing what to do and (2) doing it consistently over time.

Have you ever wondered why successful people seem to have win after win after win? What are they doing that the rest of the population isn’t? What’s the secret sauce? Well, it’s not something you can buy in a jar, but if you put into practice what I’m about to tell you, it will help you start succeeding on a regular basis.

“Success is a function of persistence and doggedness and the willingness to work hard for 22 minutes to make sense of something that most people would give up on after 30 seconds.” ~ Malcolm Gladwell

This one change in your life is so simple but 90% of people won’t do it. Why? The same reason they don’t put other proven tools to use. We read books but don’t implement the concepts. We know exercising everyday is incredible for our health but most won’t make the effort. We buy into the lies the tell us that if we are really going to change and have the kind of life we want, we will have to win the lottery, walk into work and suddenly receive a massive raise or wake up one day and have the next huge idea that will make us millions. But life just doesn’t work that way.  The most successful people in the world do simple things every single day that bring them incredible results. And you can to.

BELIEF

The BIG concept is Belief. What we believe, or don’t believe about ourselves will ultimately become a reality. Call it a self-fulfilling prophecy if you must but we are all by-products of what we believe to be true. The job you have, the life you lead, the debt your carry – are all the results of decisions you have made because of your belief. One of my favorite quotes about what we choose to believe is in Proverbs 23:7, “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” Or as Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.”photo_girl_bridge_2

The tricky thing about belief is that your brain acts on what you tell it to believe. Really make a decision to learn something new and you will find a way to accomplish it. Draw the line in the sand and make a definitive decision to get in shape and you will make it happen.

For 400 years, scientists believed that after childhood the brain could no longer change. The older you got, the more fixed you were in your ways. This has been proven to be completely false according to Norman Doidge M.D. in his book, The Brain that Changes Itself. You can give your brain new information regarding what you want in life and it will change. This science is called, neuroplasticity. I’m a huge believer in what the discovery of neuroplasticity means for our ability to change things in our lives. In practical terms, it means that you can create new routines and that over time, your brain will begin to forge those beliefs, they will become habits, and you will be a different person.

Here is the simple shift:

(1) Tell yourself what you’re going to believe and what you’re going to accomplish every single morning. Make it the very first thing you do. Don’t leave it to chance. If you don’t lead your life someone, or something else will lead it for you.

Go buy a small notebook – write your life vision and the very top of the page. Your life vision is about the reason you are on this earth – who you want to be, what you want your life to look like, and why this vision matters to you. When you do this you are forging the belief. Then, write down your “Vital few,” – 2-4 very specific things you will focus on today that will help you reach your life vision. When you wake up in the morning, this if the 1st thing you look at. Neuroplasticity will come alive for you no matter how old you are or how many failures and disappointments life has delivered. You are going to tell your brain what to do and what to believe from this point forward. No longer will you leave this to chance.

(2) At the end of the day, sit down and write 5 small wins in that same notebook. This builds confidence and self-belief. It will build new neural connections in your brain. This will teach you what it looks like to achieve something every day. 5 small wins a day x 30 days = 150 wins every month. After one year this adds up to 1850 small acts of excellence and that is a major win.

66 days is your magic number. Dr. Phillippa Lally, a health psychology researcher at University College London, conducted an in depth research study that zeroed in on exactly how many days it takes to embed a habit. Do not skip a day. This can have profound implications in your life. You can do anything for 66 days.

There is your simple shift. Do this, and everything in your life has the potential to change. This is not fantasy, it’s science. Do not leave your future and your dreams to chance. You are not a powerless, passive person in the process of your outcomes. You are in control! Use this simple tool to begin to shape your life in the direction you want it to go. Refuse to allow yourself to coast with the 90% who submit their dreams to chance.

This is your life. These are your dreams and they are worth the investment.

[…] How you start your day is incredibly important. Protect yourself from negativity! Remember, garbage in – garbage out. If you allow your mind to begin the day with bad news on Facebook, turning on the news, or a stressful to do list in your inbox, chances are that day will not go well for you. Spend the first minutes of your morning focusing on what matters to you. For a detailed plan on how to do this click here. […]
